Jonathan Livny, Ph.D.
Senior Research Scientist; Senior Group Leader; Institute Scientist

Jonathan Livny is a senior research scientist and senior group leader at the Ó³»´«Ã½ of MIT and Harvard, where he is an institute scientist. There, he co-directs the Microbial Omics Core in the Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program and heads the Technology Core of the Ó³»´«Ã½â€™s Genome Center for Infectious Diseases. In these roles, Livny leads efforts to develop and scale methods for generating and interpreting high-throughput sequencing data to better understand, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases. Livny also oversees a production platform he established to make protocols developed by his group and others accessible to the infectious disease research community both within and outside the Ó³»´«Ã½.
In addition to his work in method development, Livny plays key roles in numerous research projects aimed at unraveling the transcriptional and regulatory pathways that govern microbial pathogenesis and at building a new generation of rapid diagnostics for infectious disease. Moreover, as a pioneer and leader in the field of microbial transcriptomics, Livny provides guidance on experimental design and data analysis to scientists around the world looking to utilize RNA-Seq in their research.
Prior to joining the Ó³»´«Ã½ in 2009, Livny completed his postdoctoral training with Matthew Waldor at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School after earning a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.S. in molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
