Science for All Seasons: Gut reactions: Using chemistry to decipher the human microbiome
The human gut is inhabited by a vast community of microorganisms. Though changes in the gut microbiome track with human health and disease, we don’t yet have a detailed understanding of exactly how these microbes affect our biology. In this video, Institute member and Harvard chemist Emily Balskus describes her lab's efforts to understand chemical processes within gut microbes, including how they metabolize the drugs and nutrients that we then take in.
